Every living language asks the ear to wake up. Tem

ne is no exception. This lesson begins the original Soul Journey language curriculum—pedagogical topics familiar to any respectful language classroom, taught in our own wording and spirit. We start with hearing before performing. Beginners should listen for key consonants and vowels as modelled by a fluent speaker or carefully chosen audio. Some sounds may feel close to English or Krio; others will not. Do not force English spellings onto what you hear. Instead, train three habits: (1) listen twice before repeating; (2) watch the mouth of a trusted teacher when possible; (3) accept that early attempts will be imperfect and still honourable. Tone and length awareness at learner level means noticing that small changes in pitch or vowel length can matter in many African languages, including Temne. You are not expected to master linguistic theory here. You are expected to slow down, copy carefully, and ask a speaker when something “sounds almost right but not quite.” Humility is a pronunciation strategy. Orthography tips: when reading simple words, follow the spelling system your instructor uses consistently. Avoid mixing random internet spellings. Keep a personal word bank only for forms you have verified. If a chart is provided in class, practise reading aloud softly—accuracy over speed.
