    Family vocabulary is more than a list; it is a map of care. Core kin terms—mother, father, child, sibling, grandparent, and other household relations your instructor confirms—help you speak about the people who raised you and the people you are raising. In many Temne and wider African contexts, “family” stretches beyond the nuclear household. Learn the words you need for your real relationships, and ask before assuming every cousin title matches English usage.

    Household roles appear in daily talk: who cooks, who farms, who pays school fees, who settles disputes. Language lessons should name roles with dignity, not stereotype. Men and women, youth and elders, all appear in living homes in diverse ways. Avoid cartoon scripts.

    Speaking about parents, children, and elders trains respect. Practise sentences that thank, ask after health, and acknowledge age appropriately. Module 4.7 will deepen elder protocols; here, begin with soft, clear kin talk.
