Lesson 4.7

Teaching-point outline

  • Greeting elders with honour
  • Chiefly and community protocols at learner level
  • Listening as respect

Lesson body

Community respect is language plus posture. Greeting elders with honour may involve special forms, slower speech, standing, or waiting to be invited to speak—details vary by setting and should be taught by people who live those protocols. This course gives learner-level guidance: show deference; do not interrupt; use the greetings your instructor marks as appropriate for elders; accept correction gracefully.

Chiefly and community protocols at learner level means knowing that traditional leadership and community offices deserve respect in many Temne contexts, without requiring you to invent titles or ceremonies. If you are invited to a formal gathering, ask a host privately what to do. Dress modestly unless told otherwise. Follow seating guidance. Do not touch objects or enter spaces you were not invited into. Do not claim chiefly kinship for status online.

Listening as respect is the highest beginner skill. Elders may teach through story, proverb, or silence. Your phone can wait. Your debate can wait. Take notes later if consent allows. Thank people for their time.

[Instructor: add verified Temne elder-greeting forms and any learner-safe protocol notes confirmed with community advisors.]

Quiz reminder (see Module 2/8 banks): honouring elders and community leadership protocols is a course standard—not optional flair.
