Today’s rundown

0:00 — News lead: no African is a stranger in Africa. According to the BBC, at least 24 vehicles were set ablaze and foreign-owned shops were looted on Thursday, 8 October, as anti-migrant protests turned violent in Soweto and Durban; in Soweto’s Orlando West, residents demanded the closure of spaza shops run by foreign nationals. Per Africanews (with AFP), protesters torched cars and threw bricks and bottles again on Friday. Per the BBC, the spark was a July Constitutional Court ruling that lets people apply for asylum even if they entered without documents; government spokesman William Baloyi told Reuters that false claims had spread that undocumented migrants would automatically get legal status, which the ruling does not do. Per Africanews, Home Affairs withdrew its directive on Friday and says it will draft a new plan. According to Insight Ghana, Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says the African Union will discuss the attacks at its January 2027 summit: “We still believe Africa can unite to win the war against poverty.” Desk opinion: fight poverty, not your neighbour.

  • Neferkare Dessalines — a new video (10 October) arguing that ammunition from the Dominican Republic is arming Haiti’s gang bosses. The record, per RDE Digital: a UN panel of experts examined 89 rifle rounds linked to the Haitian gang 400 Mawozo, and 41 carried markings tied to the Dominican army or police; an earlier inventory found 908,001 items, mainly ammunition, diverted from Dominican police depots. Per Listín Diario, the Dominican Defence Ministry says it is investigating.
  • Sahel progress (Niger & Burkina Faso): The Latest — a video (9 October) arguing that Niger’s oil wealth must now serve the people of Niger. Per the Niger Press Agency, the cabinet recalled on 9 October that the pump price of petrol was cut from 540 to 499 CFA francs a litre and diesel from 668 to 618; it says fraud and governance problems feed the fuel shortages and has set up a technical committee. Per Faso7, 85 hectares of market gardens with 32 boreholes were inaugurated in Ouagadougou on 9 October for more than 2,500 women, with European Union partnership. Per Aconews, Burkina’s defence minister hailed the opening of the Texforces factory, which the outlet calls the country’s largest uniform-making plant.
  • Make Afrika Great — a commentary (9 October) on a speech by Cameroonian analyst Claude Wilfried Ekanga. Per Lefaso.net, Ekanga gave the opening address at the 15th African Universities of Communication of Ouagadougou and told the outlet that Africans must return to teaching their own history, read widely, dig deep and use today’s technology for good.

4:00 — Culture, tech & spirit. According to her publicists, Yemi Alade has released her seventh studio album, “It’s Yemi Alade”, 15 tracks that return to her highlife roots, with Bien (Kenya), Ferre Gola and Singuila (Congo), and Don Jazzy and Teni (Nigeria) among the guests; her fans chose the title. Per African-Startups, Healthleap, founded in South Africa in 2022 by siblings Josiah and Jemima Meyer, has raised $38 million; its software reads hospital records every day to flag patients whose conditions, such as malnutrition, are being missed. Per Deseret News, Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” celebrated her 100th birthday in Fort Worth, Texas, on 7 October with a $3 million gift from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints toward the planned National Juneteenth Museum and its genealogy centre. And per The Trumpet, Nigeria’s Yobe State closed its 36th Qur’anic recitation competition in Damaturu with 154 participants; Abubakar Usman of Potiskum and Amina Sa’idu Haruna of Nangere took the top prizes.

6:00 — Write About It + SJOL take. Fresh on the shelf: Sierra Leone Watching Closely (the Supreme Court’s constitutional amendment hearing carried live, with the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists coordinating coverage to reduce misinformation, plus a new faith and community health initiative) and One Whisker at a Time (the Amhara folktale “The Lion’s Whiskers” and mathematician Dr. Gladys West). Jamilah’s take (opinion): lies are fast and truth is patient — trust is won one whisker at a time, so check the voice note before you forward it.

8:00 — Closing opinion. The shopkeeper did not steal your future. Protect every person on your soil, citizen or stranger; speak plainly and early, because silence is where rumours breed; and be the generation that checks the voice note before it becomes a riot. Ubuntu: I am because we are. (Labeled opinion.)
