English Grammar for Beginners — night-sky hero

Soul Journey of Life official gold logo

Welcome, dear learner. In this gentle beginner course, Sister Na’imah guides you through the building blocks of English grammar: what a sentence needs, word jobs (nouns, verbs, adjectives — light touch), be / have / there is, present simple for habits and facts, questions and negatives, and everyday helpers (articles, plurals, pronouns, and simple connectors).

Lessons use warm teaching, everyday examples from market, family, school, phone messages, and travel, and plenty of listening, speaking, and short writing practice. We do not re-teach phonics sounds here — if you want clearer pronunciation first, visit our companion course English Phonics for Beginners. Grammar and phonics are friends who live in different classrooms.

Rooted in Africa, open to all. Perfect for Sierra Leonean and West African English-adjacent speakers, global ESL beginners, adults, and older teens.

Progress path — five topics

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Build a complete simple sentence (subject + verb + idea) and name basic word jobs: noun, verb, adjective (light touch).
  2. Use present forms of be, have, and there is / there are for identity, possession, and existence in everyday talk.
  3. Use present simple for habits, facts, and feelings (like / want / need) with light subject–verb agreement (I work / she works).
  4. Form yes/no questions, wh- questions, and negatives (don’t / doesn’t, am not / isn’t / aren’t) in short, clear exchanges.
  5. Use beginner articles (a / an / the light), plurals, pronouns (I / you / he / she / it / we / they; this / that), and everyday connectors (and / but / because light).
  6. Read and write short dialogues and messages that sound natural in market, family, school, phone, and travel situations.
  7. Self-check common beginner errors kindly and keep practicing with confidence.
  8. Know the next steps: continue with Intermediate Grammar (coming next on this path) and keep using English Phonics for Beginners as a pronunciation companion.
